On Friday evening at the Sackville Heights
Elementary School field
the Falcons dropped the host team by a score of 4-2. Sydney Adamson and Isabelle Bennett scored a
pair of goals each Adamson in the opening half and Bennett in the second half
and they made a perfect sandwich as in between Sackille had struck for two
markers of their own. Christina Cleroux

Fraser, Lindy Quann, Isobel DeMont and all recorded assists in this contest
while winger Sydney Adamson received player of the game honours. Veronica Deno had a strong performance at the

Game 2 NNU Falcons 2 vs Moncton First Touch 0
On Saturday afternoon the Falcons renewed an old rivalry
with Moncton First Touch and emerged with a 2-0 shutout victory. In an intense well played game Falcons keeper
Christina Cleroux kept Codiac off the board making two fine saves on her way to
recording the shutout. Once the Falcons
found their gait the resulting in
pressure on the Moncton net. Jenna
Fraser began the attack from her left back position with a ball down the flank
that sent winger Vicki Oliver deep into the Moncton zone, Oliver deftly touched
the ball to Isabelle Bennett who sent a screaming shot on goal and the
resulting rebound was driven home by Sydney Adamson.
Just prior to halftime Isobel DeMont drove home a low drive
from a scramble in front of the Moncton net, as a direct result of a Veronica
Deno corner kick. From this point on the
defence of Lauren Hale, Juliana Ali, Tiffany Prosser and Krishma Joshi thwarted
any and all Moncton attacks. Alex
Hendedrson and Kelsey Crawford had good games in the midfield for the blue,
black and white. Isabelle Bennett
received the nod for player of the game.

Championship Game
NNU Falcons 1 Sackville United 1
Sackville wins 2-1 on penalty kicks.
In an entertaing ing final the first half provided plenty of
end to end action but no goals as both teams played a patient game in the
sweltering heat. In the scecond half
Isobel DeMont put the Falcons aheaad on a nice shot after a set up from
Karleigh Avery and Sydney Adamson. Vicki
Oliver won the ball in the corner and dispossed the Sackville fullback to
iniate the scoring chance. But the
Falcons could only hold the lead for
eight minutes when Sackville headed home the equalizer from a direct
free kick played on the left side. The
remainder of regulation time settled nothing as did the two brief over time
periods. So it was off to the dhoot-out
lottery and on this occaision the numbers came up 2-1 for Sackville.
Keeper Christina Cleroux was named player of the game for
NNU while Alex Henderson, Jenna Fraser and Krishma Joshi all had solid
performances for Northern Nova.
The Northern Nova United U14 Boys travelled to Cape Breton this weekend for

On Saturday our NNU U 14 boys continued with their solid performance to
defeat North Inverness 7 to 0, and tied Riverview 1 to 1. Persistence paid
off when we won on Sunday against Whitney Pier 3 to 0, to put NNU through to

The 24th edition of the Gunn Baldursson Memorial soccer tournament was held this past weekend in the valley and the Northern Nova United U-16 Tier 2A girls brought home the gold medal. The Falcons went through the preliminary with a record of 3 wins and no losses. NNU defeated Halifax County 4-0, Halifax City 5-0 and Cole Harbour 2-1. Leading the offence through these games were Sydney Adamson 2 goals, Katie Walsh with 4, while Heather Beaton, Karleigh Avery, Isobel DeMont, Isabelle Bennett, and Lindy Quann each recorded single tallies.
The cross over game saw Northern Nova play Sackville United in a very physical contest, eventual score being 2-1 for NNU, with Adamson and DeMont doing the damage.
The final was against a strong Bedford team and highlighted the talents once again of Isobel DeMont for the Falcons who open the scoring in the first half only to be followed up shortly there after by a strike by Bedford. The second half had the NNU squad showcasing their ability to defend as the Bedford squad pressed for the go ahead marker but were held off the score sheet. Not until the final two minutes of play did Northern Nova seal the match, when Veronica Deno’s free kick from 30 yards out eluded the keeper.
Having an exceptional tournament were defenders Krishma Joshi, Jenna Fraser, Tiffany Prosser, and Veronica Deno, while midfielders Jessica Taylor, Kelsey Crawford, and Alex Henderson turned in solid performances.
Going the distance in goal throughout the weekend and establishing herself as a top keeper at the U16 level was Christina Cleroux.
After the final the team was presented with championship Gunn t-shirts and plaque. In keeping with NNU tradition the team headed off to Avery’s for the celebratory ice cream treat.
Gunn summaries ——- Preliminary round
Game #1 NNU 4 Halifax County United 0
The Falcons started the tournament quickly when Sydney Adamson used her outside speed mid way through the first half to strike the first goal for NNU, assists to Katie Walsh, Kelsey Crawford, and Veronica Deno. Heather Beaton from Veronica Deno, Jessica Taylor and Karleigh Avery provided the two goal cushion. Katie Walsh made it 3-0 with a nice strike from outside the 18, assists to Kelsey Crawford and Tiffany Prosser. The second half saw Adamson at it again with the final tally of the game, with assists to Walsh and Krishma Joshi. Unfortunately the Falcons lost the services of Heather Beaton for the weekend when she suffered an ankle injury late in the first half.
Steady defensive performances were turned in by Cara Mac Ivor, Juliana Ali and Lauren Hale. Earning the victory in goal was Christina Cleroux. Player of the game honors went to Sydney Adamson.
Game #2 NNU 5 Halifax City Celtics 0
This contest was played during some of the heaviest rain seen all weekend but the NNU squad did not have their scoring spirit dampened. The Falcons opened the match with a well executed throw in from Jessica Taylor to Isobel DeMont to Katie Walsh. Karleigh Avery struck shortly after with assist to Isabelle Bennett. Isabelle Bennett recorded the third goal with assists to Katie Walsh and Isobel DeMont. Lindy Quann finished a rebound off a shot by Sydney Adamson with assist to Tiffany Prosser, early in the second half. Closing out the scoring was Katie Walsh with a perfectly place free kick to the top of the net.
Midfielders Alex Henderson, Natalie Mac Queen and defender Jenna Fraser continued to perform well during
this contest. Player of the game honors went to Katie Walsh. Christina Cleroux recorded the clean sheet in goal.
Game #3 NNU 2 Cole Harbour 1
After a long span between games
the Falcons took to the field for a late evening tilt. Katie Walsh delivered
the opening volley in this contest with assists to Karleigh Avery and Lindy
Quann. Cole Harbour would deliver a wake up call to
the NNU squad with a goal of their own, early in the second half. Back on their
game Isobel DeMont converted a one timer into the eventual game winner of an
excellent cross from Sydney Adamson, with assist to Krishma Joshi. Forwards Randi Fraser and Vicki Oliver
continued their consistent play. Player of the game for the Falcons was
Veronica Deno. Winning keeper was Christina Cleroux.
Game #4 NNU 2 Sackville 1 Cross Over
With dry fields and a new day Northern
Nova started this physical contest with renewed energy. Sydney Adamson scored
the goal of the weekend with a header, up and over the outstretched keeper.
Delivering the ball on target was Jessica Taylor with assist to Isobel DeMont.
Sackville tied the contest early in the second frame with a well placed strike
from deep in the corner. Not to be out done Isobel DeMont put the game away
late in the second half with a nice chip, assists to Karleigh Avery and Isabelle
Bennett. This contest saw several yellow cards, a red card player ejection and
parent removal from the sideline all by Sackville, while our players calmly
went about the business at hand.
Captains Katie Walsh, Veronica
Deno and Christina Cleroux showed great leadership on the field during this
eventful contest.
Game #5 NNU 2 Bedford 1 Final
After a picnic at Willow Park and with anticipation building the Falcons returned to the pitch. The NNU squad
got off to a great start, having the wind at their back and scoring early when
Isobel DeMont struck from the top of the 18 and caught the keeper off her line,
assists to Isabelle Bennett. Bedford also scored to tie the contest. During the second half Bedford throw everything they had at NNU but our defenders were grace under pressure not allowing the go ahead goal. Keeper Christina Cleroux made several key saves to keep the contest even. Eventually the tide would turn when Veronica Deno struck a free kick bullet into the wind
and through the keeper’s hands with only minutes to play. Defenders then played out the clock to complete the gold medal victory.
This was a total team effort with all 20 players contributing to the victory.
Congratulations Gunn Baldursson
